1621. for about a month, <strong>and</strong> on surrendering was<br />

almost reduced to ruins. At the town of<br />

Clanoc, the pastor, with <strong>his</strong> father, father-in-<br />

law, <strong>and</strong> other citizens were publicly executed,<br />

<strong>and</strong> a part of the garrison murdered in cold<br />

blood. At Montauban the success of the<br />

King's army was arrested. That garrison was<br />

defended with great skill <strong>and</strong> vigor by La<br />

Force <strong>and</strong> Count De Ovval, who repulsed all<br />

the assaults of the King <strong>and</strong> Lu^^nes. Becoming<br />

discouraged, the royal forces kindled<br />

watch fires in their camp, as if preparing for<br />

a nightly assault, <strong>and</strong> then stole away before<br />

their movement was discovered. Luynes, chagrined<br />

at the failure attributed to <strong>his</strong> want of<br />

generalship, <strong>and</strong> fearing the loss of the King's<br />
