I will try whether you<br />

will have the boldness<br />

to kill the daughter of a king. If you should<br />

commit such a crime, heaven <strong>and</strong> earth wiU<br />

avenge her death, on all your lives, even to the<br />

children in their cradles." <strong>The</strong> Duke, to<br />

whom she had espoused her daughter, Ann<br />

of Este, paused <strong>and</strong> threatened her no more.<br />

She was always exposed<br />

to trials because she<br />

resided between the two fires of France on<br />

the one side, <strong>and</strong> Rome the seat of papacy on<br />

the other. But she maintained her faith to the<br />

last, <strong>and</strong> lived to see the Reformed Church of<br />

France fully organized, separated from Rome,<br />

<strong>and</strong> extending its influence over a large part<br />

of her native country. She died June 12, 1575.<br />

John During the same period, John Calvin was<br />

Calvin, another person who wielded a great influence<br />

in behalf of the new religion. Born in France<br />

at Noyon, Picardy, July 10, 1509, when<br />

eighteen years of age, by advice of <strong>his</strong> father,<br />

he turned <strong>his</strong> attention to law <strong>and</strong> became<br />

brilliant, receiving the Degree of Doctor of<br />

Laws. After the death of <strong>his</strong> father in 1531,<br />

he studied Greek <strong>and</strong> Protestantism under<br />

Melchior Wolmar, <strong>and</strong> theology in Paris. In<br />

the latter part of 1532, he was thoroughly converted<br />

to the Reformed Religion. He preached<br />

frequently in the meetings of the Protestants,<br />

commonly closing with the words, "If God be<br />

for us, who can be against us." He prepared<br />

the inaugural address of Nicholas Cop, which<br />

Cop delivered in 1533, before a large assembly.<br />

<strong>The</strong> address was a plea for reform in the Established<br />

Church, on a pure gospel basis. On
