March 19, by which the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s were again introd.<br />

granted the privilege of the Edict of January<br />

with several additions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> two armies now united to beat back the<br />

English. As soon as that matter was settled,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Catherine de Medici could dispense with<br />

the aid of the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s, she restricted their<br />

privileges, <strong>and</strong> began to plot their extermination.<br />

<strong>The</strong> secret treaty between her son,<br />

Henry H. <strong>and</strong> Philip, King of Spain, in the<br />

spring of 1559, <strong>and</strong> its execution thwarted by<br />

Henry's untimely death, <strong>and</strong> which she had<br />

never ceased to cherish, she now hoped to be<br />

able to execute. She <strong>and</strong> the young King<br />

spent 1564-65 in a tour through the provinces<br />

bordering on Germany. At the close of the<br />

tour, they were met at Bayonne by the Queen<br />

of Spain, the eldest sister of the King, <strong>and</strong><br />

the Duke of Alva. <strong>The</strong>re it was planned that Plot to<br />

Charles IX. should act in concert with Philip ^^^l^'<br />

of Spain to exterminate the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s. Alva Hugueproposed<br />

that Charles should immediately °°*^seize<br />

the chief men of the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> ^^<br />

strike off their heads, but Catherine thought<br />

the proposition prematurely unwise. In 1566,<br />

she convened all the thirteen Parliaments of<br />

the kingdom at Maulins, <strong>and</strong> after<br />

affairs of state had been arranged,<br />

to reconcile the aspirants to the<br />

crown. Failing in the attempt, she became<br />

more exasperated than ever, <strong>and</strong> ordered both<br />

parties to quit the court, retaining however<br />

Marshal Montgomery <strong>and</strong> Cardinal Lorraine,<br />

who originally proposed the secret plot to exterminate<br />

the <strong>Huguenot</strong>s. At t<strong>his</strong> time the<br />

German Protestant princes were induced by<br />

Admiral Coligny to send an embassy to<br />

Charles IX. to entreat him to allow the Hugue-
