Introduction to <strong>The</strong>atre 3 credits<br />

An introduction to the theories and practices <strong>of</strong> the<br />

theatre arts. Dramatic structure, dramatic literature,<br />

critical writing, acting, directing, design,<br />

practical stagecraft, and some theatre history will<br />

all be touched on in an effort to introduce students<br />

to the fullness and variety <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong> theatre.<br />

Introduction to Acting 3 credits<br />

This first course in a three-course sequence is<br />

intended as an introduction to the development and<br />

training <strong>of</strong> the actor, covering the fundamental elements<br />

<strong>of</strong> the actor’s craft; including internal and<br />

external technique, character analysis, and<br />

vocal/physical warmups. <strong>The</strong>se elements will be<br />

practically applied in various in-class exercises<br />

and rehearsed performance work. <strong>The</strong> subject <strong>of</strong><br />

auditions will also be covered.<br />

THTR. 112 Pr<strong>of</strong>. Larsen<br />

Introduction to Technical <strong>The</strong>atre 4 credits<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> materials, equipment, and techniques<br />

used in the construction and finishing <strong>of</strong> scenery.<br />

Also includes principles <strong>of</strong> lighting and sound and<br />

special effects for the stage. Forty hours <strong>of</strong> lab<br />

work in one <strong>of</strong> the following areas: scenery, costumes,<br />

lighting, or props; and participation on a<br />

crew for a major <strong>University</strong> Players’ production<br />

will be required.<br />

THTR. 210 Dr. Robbins, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Bellah<br />

Intermediate Acting 3 credits<br />

(Prerequisite: THTR. 111 with a grade <strong>of</strong> B- or<br />

higher.) This second in a three-course sequence<br />

builds on the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> the acting process<br />

and focuses on further exploration <strong>of</strong> internal acting<br />

technique. Stanislavski-based and/or other<br />

modern and contemporary acting systems are<br />

explored through exercises, written analysis, and<br />

scene/monologue study. <strong>The</strong>re is an emphasis on<br />

ensemble acting in the classroom, rehearsal, and<br />

production.<br />

THTR. 211 Dr. Robbins<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre History I 3 credits<br />

A chronological study <strong>of</strong> western theatre from<br />

ancient Greek drama to 17th century British<br />

drama. A selection <strong>of</strong> plays from representative<br />

playwrights will be read and discussed. with an<br />

emphasis on the social, cultural, and theatrical<br />

contexts within which these playwrights lived and<br />

worked.<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre History II 3 credits<br />

A chronological study <strong>of</strong> western theatre from 17th<br />

century French and Spanish, through Restoration<br />

and 18th century British drama. up to 19th century<br />

German, Scandinavian, and Russian drama. A<br />

selection <strong>of</strong> plays from representative playwrights<br />

will be read and discussed, with an emphasis on the<br />

social, cultural, and theatrical contexts within<br />

which these playwrights lived and worked.<br />

Design for the <strong>The</strong>atre 3 credits<br />

(Formerly Thtr 113; Prerequisite: <strong>The</strong>atre 112 with<br />

a grade <strong>of</strong> B- or higher. An introduction to the various<br />

design and production elements in theatre.<br />

Scenery, lighting, costumes. projections, props and<br />

sound will be explored. Students participate in the<br />

design elements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> productions.<br />

THTR. 214 Pr<strong>of</strong>. Larsen<br />

Drama Practicum 3 credits<br />

(Prerequisite: any other course that may be counted<br />

in <strong>The</strong>atre minor.) Work on one <strong>of</strong> the major aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> producing a play: acting, costuming, set construction,<br />

lighting, publicity, and box <strong>of</strong>fice management.<br />

THTR. 280 Pr<strong>of</strong>. Larsen<br />

Production Laboratory 1 credits<br />

This course is designed to provide the theatre major<br />

practical experience in technical theatre through a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> production-related jobs including, but not<br />

limited to, props master, master electrician, sound<br />

designer, asst. technical director, asst. stage manager,<br />

and running crew. Students must do a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> 40 hours <strong>of</strong> production work and complete the<br />

assigned tasks on deadline to receive credit. May be<br />

taken for credit up to five times.<br />

THTR. 310 Dr. Robbins<br />

<strong>The</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>atre 3 credits<br />

Students will study the theories <strong>of</strong> theatre<br />

advanced in the writing <strong>of</strong> Diderot, Archer,<br />

Stanislavsky, Vakhtangov, Brecht, Copeau,<br />

Artaud, Grotowski, Brook, and Schechner.<br />

THTR. 311 Pr<strong>of</strong>. Bellah<br />

Directing I 3 credits<br />

(Formerly Thtr 411 Prererequisite: THTR. 111 with<br />

a grade <strong>of</strong> B- or higher or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.)<br />

An introduction to the basic mechanics <strong>of</strong> stage<br />

directing with an emphasis on the tools needed to<br />

approach the staging <strong>of</strong> a play, such as playscript<br />

analysis, interpretive skills, organizational skills,<br />

communication and leaderships skills, developing a<br />

groundplan, blocking, and composition/picturization.<br />

Several plays will be read and analyzed.<br />

Student directors will select, cast, and direct a short<br />

scene for performance.<br />

THTR. 313 Pr<strong>of</strong>. Larsen<br />

Set Design for the <strong>The</strong>atre 3 credits<br />

(Formerly Thtr 213; Prerequisite: THTR. 213 with<br />

a grade <strong>of</strong> B- or higher.) An exploration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

basic crafts <strong>of</strong> the theatrical set designer.<br />

Concentration on developing one’s personal vision<br />

and interpretive skills through script analysis.<br />

Practice in sketching, drafting, painting, collage,<br />

model making and typical stage construction.<br />

Introduction to environmental theatre.<br />

THTR. 370 Pr<strong>of</strong>. Larsen<br />

Technical <strong>The</strong>atre: 3 credits<br />

Special Topics<br />

Topic and prerequisites will be announced prior to<br />

preregistration.
