CHARLES V. SABATINO, SR. SCHOLARSHIP—This fund was established in 1990 by<br />

Frank C. Sabatino, Esq. ‘76 as a memorial to his father. This scholarship, based on merit, is<br />

awarded to a sophomore who has studied history.<br />

THE JOSEPHINE SARCINELLI MEMORIAL AWARD—Med Science Laboratories,<br />

<strong>Scranton</strong>, established this award in 1983 to honor the memory <strong>of</strong> Josephine Sarcinelli, the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice manager <strong>of</strong> the firm for many years. <strong>The</strong> award is given to an incoming freshman from<br />

Lackawanna County who is in financial need and intends to major in medical technology.<br />

SCRANTON TIMES/SUNDAY TIMES/TRIBUNE—This award was established by the<br />

Lynett-Haggerty families to provide support to current or former newspaper carriers attending<br />

the U <strong>of</strong> S. Applications for the award should be filed with the <strong>University</strong>’s Financial Aid<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

THOMAS J. SHEVLIN, JR. AND DR. JOHN F. SHEVLIN MEMORIAL AWARD—This<br />

fund was established in 1989 through a bequest from Thomas J. Shevlin, Jr. <strong>of</strong> Carbondale, Pa.<br />

Income from this award is used to assist deserving young men and women in pre-medical studies.<br />

THE SPECIALITY GROUP, INC. EDUCATIONAL FUND—<strong>The</strong> fund was established in<br />

1988 for students <strong>of</strong> Dunmore High School, or Bishop O’Hara High School, Dunmore,<br />

Pennsylvania.<br />

THE FRANCIS J. STAHL ‘35 MEMORIAL FUND—<strong>The</strong>se funds were established<br />

through the will <strong>of</strong> Mary T. Stahl and her husband Francis J. Stahl, a 1935 graduate <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. <strong>The</strong> fund assists local needy students.<br />

THE AMELIA SURACI AWARD—This endowed fund was established in 1977 by the late<br />

Mr. Frank Suraci, Chairman <strong>of</strong> Parodi Cigar Corporation, to honor his wife Amelia. After Mr.<br />

Suraci’s death, contributions from the Suraci and Keating families were added to the endowment.<br />

Each year, income from the fund is distributed to deserving and needy students.<br />

THE TRL ASSOCIATES SCHOLARSHIP—This award was established by Stephen P.<br />

Hrobuchak, Jr., President <strong>of</strong> TRL, Inc., to benefit TRL employees and their children.<br />

UNICO SCHOLARSHIP—<strong>The</strong> UNICO Foundation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Scranton</strong> Chapter <strong>of</strong> UNICO<br />

National, a philanthropic group, established this fund in 1980 to <strong>of</strong>fer financial assistance to<br />

deserving students.<br />

CHARLES J. VOLPE SCHOLARSHIP AND LECTURE FUND—Established in 1988, this<br />

fund is in memory <strong>of</strong> Charles J. Volpe, a well respected <strong>Scranton</strong> businessman and public servant.<br />

<strong>The</strong> award provides tuition for a student, entering their senior year, who is majoring in Political<br />

Science. <strong>The</strong> Lecture Fund provides for an annual lecture featuring a well known public servant.<br />

THE PAUL L. WALEFF MEMORIAL AWARD—This fund was established by the parents<br />

<strong>of</strong> Paul L. Waleff, who died in 1984 while a student at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. <strong>The</strong> award is<br />

presented to a junior or senior who plans a career <strong>of</strong> service to the handicapped.<br />

THE THOMAS P. WHITE AWARD—Mrs. Irene White established this award in honor <strong>of</strong><br />

the memory <strong>of</strong> her husband Thomas. It is to be awarded to an education major and a “non-traditional”<br />

student, such as a transfer student or an individual returning to school after an absence.<br />

THE WILLIAM ZAHLER AWARD—In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. William P. Zahler <strong>of</strong><br />

Mayfield Heights, Ohio established an award in memory <strong>of</strong> their son William Zahler, Jr., an<br />

associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> English at the <strong>University</strong>. Income from the endowed award is distributed<br />

to deserving young men and women.<br />

ANNUAL AWARDS<br />

DR. A.J. CAWLEY AWARD—In memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. A.J. Cawley <strong>of</strong> Pittston, Pa., a fund was<br />

established by a legacy from his sister, Miss Ellen Cawley. Income therefrom is used to provide<br />

an award to an Electrical Engineering Major each year.<br />

CECO ASSOCIATES, INC. AWARD—Started in 1993 by Mr. Angelo Rosati, President <strong>of</strong><br />

CECO Associates, Inc. to assist a Lackawanna County senior pursuing a degree in engineering<br />

or a similar field.<br />

CONNAUGHT LABORATORIES, INC.—Each year, two graduate students with demonstrated<br />

excellence in the field <strong>of</strong> biology and who are pursuing a Biochemistry Masters Degree<br />

are selected for a summer internship at Connaught’s Swiftwater, PA location.<br />
