THE LEN AND DEBORAH GOUGEON ST. ANN’S AWARD—Established in 1986<br />

through a gift from Drs. Len and Deborah Gougeon. This award, based on need, will provide<br />

assistance to a graduate <strong>of</strong> St. Ann’s Grammar School or a member <strong>of</strong> St. Ann’s Monastery<br />

Parish, <strong>Scranton</strong>, PA.<br />

JOSEPH P. HARPER AWARD—A fund was established in 1967 to honor the memory <strong>of</strong><br />

Joseph P. Harper, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physics. An annual award is given to a senior Physics major upon<br />

the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Physics department and with the approval <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Financial<br />

Aid. <strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Physics presents with the award, a citation reminding the recipient <strong>of</strong> the<br />

high scholarly ideals, exemplary life, and dedicated service represented by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Harper.<br />

THE KATHRYN AND BERNARD HYLAND MEMORIAL AWARD FOR EXCEL-<br />

LENCE IN BIOLOGY—A gift from alumnus Bernard V. Hyland, M.D., made in loving memory<br />

<strong>of</strong> his parents, established in 1980 an endowment to perpetuate this annual award. <strong>The</strong><br />

award is presented to a graduating senior from the Biology Department who, in the opinion <strong>of</strong><br />

the department’s faculty, has achieved distinction based on academic excellence in biology,<br />

personal integrity and concern for others.<br />

THE ROSE KELLY AWARD—A <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> alumnus, Joseph Wineburgh,<br />

Ph.D., set in place an endowment to link the efforts <strong>of</strong> elementary and secondary school teachers to<br />

the achievements <strong>of</strong> college students. Each year, an outstanding student is selected by a committee<br />

appointed by the Academic Vice President. <strong>The</strong> Rose I. Kelly Award winner is asked to name a<br />

high school or elementary teacher who most influenced his or her pre-college academic preparation.<br />

Both the student and the teacher from pre-college days are honored at a campus ceremony.<br />

Dr. Wineburgh established the program to honor an elementary teacher, Rose I. Kelly, who<br />

greatly influenced his life.<br />

LACKAWANNA COUNTY LAWYERS’ AUXILIARY AWARD—Established in 1982,<br />

this award is annually presented to an outstanding graduating senior from Lackawanna County<br />

to provide scholarship assistance in the first year <strong>of</strong> law school. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is given directly<br />

by the Lawyers’ Auxiliary, upon the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Pre-Law Advisor.<br />

MR. AND MRS. PALMER P. LIBERATORE AWARD—Established in 1991 by Mr.<br />

Palmer Liberatore, the grant is given to a deserving student from Lackawanna County who<br />

demonstrates academic ability and financial need.<br />

THE CHARLOTTE W. NEWCOMBE FOUNDATION AWARD—This fund provides<br />

scholarship aid for mature, second-career women students.<br />

O’MALLEY & HARRIS PRE-LAW AWARD—This award, sponsored by the law firm<br />

O’Malley & Harris, P.C., is based on the outcome <strong>of</strong> an annual competition among full-time<br />

undergraduates at both the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> and Marywood College. Entry information is<br />

available from either school’s pre-law advisor.<br />

CHRISTOPHER JASON PERFILIO MEMORIAL AWARD FOR THE SPECIAL JESUIT<br />

LIBERAL ARTS PROGRAM (SJLA)—This award was established by Christopher’s parents<br />

and older brother for SJLA students who have high academic achievement and show financial<br />

need. Christopher passed away the summer before his senior year. His degree was conferred<br />

posthumously in May, 1995.<br />

THE BERNARD SHAIR MEMORIAL AWARD—This award was established by family,<br />

friends and colleagues <strong>of</strong> Dr. Shair through the <strong>Scranton</strong> Area Foundation. It will be presented<br />

annually to a graduating senior <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> who has been enrolled in an<br />

accredited dental school the same year <strong>of</strong> the award.<br />

THE ARMOND AND BETTY STRUTIN AWARD—This fund was created out <strong>of</strong> the generosity<br />

and commitment to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> by Armond and Betty Strutin. <strong>The</strong> fund is<br />

distributed each year to deserving students identified and designated by the Purple Club.<br />

BIENNIAL SCHOLARSHIP<br />

DR. JOHN H. CORCORAN AWARD—Biennially the Society <strong>of</strong> the Friendly Sons <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Patrick <strong>of</strong> Lackawanna County provides funds for a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> student or students<br />

to enjoy the benefits <strong>of</strong> studying at an Irish <strong>University</strong> for one or two semesters in Ireland.<br />
