Criminal Justice Process 3 credits<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> the law <strong>of</strong> criminal procedure, treating<br />

investigation and police practices, preliminary proceedings,<br />

and trial, as they relate to the development<br />

and structure <strong>of</strong> the American criminal justice<br />

system and as they affect <strong>of</strong>fenders.<br />

Criminal Law 3 credits<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> substantive criminal law in view <strong>of</strong> its<br />

historical foundations, purpose, functions and limits;<br />

<strong>of</strong> crime and defenses generally; and <strong>of</strong> the elements<br />

which constitute certain specific crimes<br />

under state and federal statutes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Bill <strong>of</strong> Rights & C.J. 3 credits<br />

From the perspective <strong>of</strong> the criminal justice pr<strong>of</strong>essional,<br />

this course addresses key principles<br />

enunciated in the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth<br />

and fourteenth amendments to the Constitution <strong>of</strong><br />

the United States.<br />

Principles <strong>of</strong> Evidence 3 credits<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> the law <strong>of</strong> evidence as it pertains<br />

to the trial <strong>of</strong> a criminal case. A discussion <strong>of</strong><br />

the common law, pertinent statutes, judicial opinions,<br />

and rules, e.g., <strong>The</strong> Federal Rules <strong>of</strong><br />

Evidence, as these relate to such concepts as direct<br />

and circumstantial evidence; opinion testimony,<br />

experts and exhibits; competence, relevance and<br />

materiality; privileges, hearsay and its exceptions.<br />

Trial, Jury and Counsel 3 credits<br />

A consideration <strong>of</strong> the rights guaranteed by the<br />

Sixth Amendment to the Constitution <strong>of</strong> the<br />

United States, surveying constitutional provisions,<br />

statutes, court rules and cases concerning the right<br />

<strong>of</strong> a criminal defendant to a speedy and public<br />

trial, to trial by jury, and to the assistance <strong>of</strong> counsel.<br />

Civil Liability 3 credits<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> the law enforcement <strong>of</strong>ficer or<br />

employee as a defendant in a civil suit arising from<br />

the scope <strong>of</strong> his employment. Liability based upon<br />

rights statutes is examined, along with a consideration<br />

<strong>of</strong> the typical defenses.<br />

Victimology 3 credits<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> the causes and consequences <strong>of</strong><br />

crime victimization. <strong>The</strong> recent emergence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the victim, the types and circumstances <strong>of</strong><br />

victimization, and the nature <strong>of</strong> the criminal justice<br />

system’s response to crime victims are considered,<br />

along with the ethical and practical dimensions <strong>of</strong><br />

crime victimization.<br />

CJ 382-383 Staff<br />

Independent Study 3 credits<br />

in Criminal Justice<br />

Directed projects and surveys in criminal justice,<br />

law enforcement, and corrections designed to give<br />

the student academic flexibility. Prerequisite: consent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Chairperson and the Instructor.<br />

CJ 480-481 Pr<strong>of</strong>s. Baker, Pryle<br />

Internship Experience 3 credits<br />

Supervised experiental learning in an approved<br />

criminal justice setting taken preferably in junior<br />

and senior year. Prerequisite: permission <strong>of</strong><br />

Instructor.<br />
