Final Role Plays and Closure
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVES
This session is an opportunity for participants to integrate all of the knowledge
and skills that they have learned during the course. Participants act out roleplays
one at a time, in front of the group, so that they can be critiqued by the
other participants and the trainers.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this session, participants will have:
1. Role-played a final counselling scenario
2. Provided constructive feedback to others’ role-plays
3. Evaluated the course

FINAL COUNSELLING SCENARIOS
The aim of this activity is to test the participants’ application of all the knowledge
and skills they have learned during the course.
Ask participants to pair up with someone that they have not yet worked with for
the final role-plays. Distribute one scenario card to each pair, and give them 15-
20 minutes to review it. Because each role-play will be observed by the rest of
the group, there will not be enough time to have each person role play the
counsellor in a scenario. Each pair can discuss the appropriate counselling
strategy for their scenario together, however. Give the pairs approximately 15-
20 minutes to discuss their strategy and practice their role-play before
conducting it. During the role plays, the “counsellors” and “callers” should sit in
chairs with their backs facing each other, in order to simulate a telephone call.
This is the only time during the training when participants will be observing and
critiquing each other as a group. In order to ensure that this process is
constructive and useful, present the following guidelines before the role-plays
begin.
