The regular GaO 6 octahedron has an O h symmetry and in principle should have 15
modes having the symmetry, Γ vib =A 1g (R) + E g (R) + 2T 1g (IR) + T 2g (R) + T 2u [184]. The
prominent Raman modes in such a regular octahedron are observed at 526 (A 1g ), 430 (E g ) and
328 cm -1 (T 2g ). The only mode observed in IR is found at around 510 cm -1 . However, in
GaOOH, the GaO 6 octahedron is distorted and hence many more modes become active in IR.
According to Zhao and Frost [185] the peaks at 276, 433 and 525 cm -1 are due to the
associated Ga-OH units of α- GaOOH phase. The 474 cm -1 peak in IR has been assigned to
the stretching mode of GaO 2 chains. The peak at 385 cm -1 is attributed to deformation mode
corresponding to GaO 6 and is reported both in GaOOH and in β-Ga 2 O 3 [186, 187]. This is
because both GaOOH and Ga 2 O 3 are made up of GaO 6 octahedra as basic building units.
Peaks around 1016 and 947 cm -1 are arising due to the δ (OH) deformation vibrations [141].
The peaks at ~612 and 696 cm -1
observed in Raman spectra are however not clearly
