BFV notifi cation rate in May 2004 (24.4 cases per<br />

100,000 population), whereas New South Wales<br />

reported a peak BFV notifi cation rate in April 2004<br />

(9.8 cases per 100,000 population). The peak BFV<br />

notifi cation rates in 2004 for Queensl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> New<br />

South Wales represent a 60–66 per cent reduction<br />

from the previous peak notifi cation rates in 2003.<br />

The highest rate <strong>of</strong> BFV infection in 2004, was in<br />

the mid-North Coast area <strong>of</strong> New South Wales<br />

(67.5 cases per 100,000 population, Map 7).<br />

Figure 50 shows the age <strong>and</strong> sex distribution <strong>of</strong><br />

BFV notifi cations. The national rate <strong>of</strong> notifi cations<br />

for BFV was highest amongst the 50–54 year age<br />

group (10.4 cases per 100,000 population), <strong>and</strong><br />

the male to female ratio was 1:1. Males in the<br />

50–54 year age group had the highest age-specifi<br />

c rates (12.4 cases per 100,000 population).<br />

The highest age-specifi c BFV notifi cation rate in<br />

females was recorded in the 45–49 year age group<br />

(9 cases per 100,000 population).<br />
