Section A: Indicator Comparisons by District District hospitals with 100 - 199 beds The average cost per PDE in this category was R980. Of the 32 districts with hospitals in this category, 27 were clustered between R800 and R1 200 per PDE with five districts above R1 200 and two below R800. Although there were some provinces such as North West and Eastern Cape with clustering around R1 100 and R800 respectively, for the most part there was wide intra- and inter-provincial variability. Section A: Indicator Comparisons by District District hospitals with more than 200 beds The average cost per PDE in 2006/07 for districts with larger district hospitals of 200 beds or more, was R927. This is the lowest average cost per PDE of all district hospitals indicating that there are efficiency gains with increasing hospital size. There are counter-balancing forces between having fewer larger hospitals that are more cost efficient versus a greater number of smaller hospitals with better access. The key principle at the end of the day is to find the balance which is most effective at improving the health and servicing the needs of the population. In this category, as with the others, there were large variations seen within and between provinces.
