Section A: Indicator Comparisons by District Metro View The average immunisation coverage in the metro districts was 88.8% slightly over 4% higher than the national average of 84.7%. Half of the metros (City of Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and City of Cape Town) had an immunisation coverage rate of more than 90% in 2006/07. Nelson Mandela Bay (ranked 47) and eThekwini (ranked 41) achieved coverage significantly below the national average. As these are well resourced and relatively strong socioeconomical areas, these rates should be improved upon. The coverage rates ranged from a high of 104.1% in Central Karoo (NC) to 72.5% in Ukhahlamba district (EC). Section A: Indicator Comparisons by District Change in Immunisation coverage There was a further improvement in the immunisation coverage nationally from 82.6% in 2005/06 to 84.7% in 2006/07, with two thirds (36) of all districts having improved. The greatest improvement was in Gauteng with Metsweding and the City of Tshwane showing the largest increases overall. The largest decrease was in Bojanala district (NW) which dropped from 72.8% in 2005/06 to 61.7% in 2006/07. There was a mixed bag in the rural areas with half the districts having improved immunisation coverage rates in 2006/07 and half showing a decline.
