Metro View
The HIV testing coverage rates for the metro districts were generally
disappointing with only the City of Cape Town achieving a coverage of over
75%. Nelson Mandela Bay and the City of Johannesburg achieved coverage
rates of 75% and 65% respectively, whilst the remaining three metro districts
had coverage rates of below 60%. This is particularly concerning, given
the high rate of antenatal attendance in metro areas and suggests that
many missed opportunities for women to access PMTCT are occurring. These
low coverage rates should be investigated to determine the bottlenecks
to increasing access to HIV counselling and testing services (HCT) in this
setting.
