When I look back, starting school and trying to
read was a nightmare. When I was about 7 my
new teacher suggested I got tested for dyslexia.
I spent a morning with an educational psychologist and did
lots of tests. It turned out I am dyslexic and some special
help was arranged for me.
REAL LIFE
It really made a difference and by the time I was 15 I could
get by. I was re-tested and got extra time for GCSE exams -
to let me have longer to check and read my answers. I got
As and Bs in everything but French, not bad!
I went to college, got some A levels and came to uni and
it’s great! I am waiting for an assessment to see if I can get
some IT equipment to help me on campus*.
* A non-repayable student’s
allowance is available if you
have a disability and are likely
to incur extra costs at university.
Ask your PA about Disabled
Students’ Allowances.
Extra help, equipment and
support is also available for
learners 16-19. Ask your PA
about this if you have a
disability.
