Think about higher education now Points to consider... • Try to plan a full two-year course now. • Most degree courses require three full A levels or equivalent. The UCAS Tariff uses a points system to compare different qualifications. • Aim to have at least two full A levels not just AS levels; this should give you access to HNDs or foundation degrees. These can usually be topped up to full degrees; ask when you apply. • The University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) has a Tariff that compares the value of advanced level qualifications and grades. Some institutions use these when offering places to students. The full tariff can be seen at www.ucas.com • Universities set their own entry qualifications, so if you have a course or career in mind, check entry qualifications now. Diploma students should check if specific Additional or Specialist Learning (ASL) is required. Remember, these may vary between institutions. • Although some universities prefer A levels in traditional subjects most accept vocational qualifications such as BTEC and OCR level 3 qualifications and 14-19 Diplomas. Check prospectuses now. • Over 40% of jobs for graduates do not specify a subject. Your degree is used as a measure of ability. • Most science degrees require two or more sciences. If you haven’t done the subjects you need, it may be possible to do a Foundation or Year Zero at the beginning of some degree courses. • If you are thinking of continuing with languages, taking two advanced level languages is useful. You may also be able to start a new language at university. • You will need high grades at both GCSE, and at advanced level, for popular subjects such as history and law, for subjects with few courses such as dentistry, pharmacy and medicine and for courses at popular universities. 30
Some degree courses require specific subjects at advanced level: Art and design - art Biological science - biology, chemistry Computer science/programming - maths Dentistry - chemistry, biology and physics or maths Dietetics - chemistry, biology Economics - maths at least to AS level Engineering - maths, physics English literature - English literature Maths - maths Medicine - chemistry, biology and physics or maths Modern foreign languages - A level in the main language(s) Music - music Pharmacy - chemistry, biology and physics or maths Physics - maths and physics Physiotherapy - two sciences Veterinary science - chemistry, biology and physics or maths Popular degrees that accept students with a wide range of subjects include business, law, media studies, drama, economics or politics.
