National Minimum Wage (NMW)<br />

• The National Minimum Wage is the minimum you can expect to get.<br />

• From October 2010 the rates are:<br />

Apprentices<br />

Age 16-17<br />

Age 18-20<br />

Age 21<br />

£2.50 an hour<br />

£3.64 an hour<br />

£4.92 an hour<br />

£5.93 an hour<br />

Payslips<br />

Most employees have a right to receive a payslip or pay statement at, or<br />

before, the time of payment.<br />

Your payslip will include:<br />

• the name of the company or person you work for<br />

• your name (the ‘employee’)<br />

• your pay reference number<br />

• payment date - when the money will be given to you or go into your<br />

account<br />

• gross pay - the amount you earned before deductions<br />

• deductions - these are paid if you earn above a certain level; these<br />

include:<br />

- a National Insurance contribution - you must pay this if you earn<br />

more than £110.01 a week. On earnings between £110.01 <strong>and</strong> £844<br />

a week you pay 11%<br />

- Income Tax - you must pay this if you earn over £6,475 each year.<br />

You pay 20% basic rate on earnings up to £37,400.<br />

These figures change each year. Other deductions can only be made if<br />

you have given permission.<br />
