“Apprentice car technician
I have always been
interested in being a car
technician. My cousin is
one and I learned a lot
from him. I helped on the
family car, changing oil,
filters and plugs and
wanted to take it
further. I love watching
grand prix racing so my
dream job would be a
Formula One technician.
“
But, being realistic, Rizwan decided a local garage would have to do to
start with. In Year 10, Rizwan went to a garage on work experience, “I
enjoyed it so much I worked there for free in the school holidays”. Once he
was 16 the garage offered him a Saturday job.
REAL LIFE
Rizwan did so well that the employer decided to offer him an
apprenticeship.
“
I had to go to a training centre for an interview
to sort out the training. They told me to work
really hard for my GCSEs, especially maths and
science, as I would need these for a vocational
qualification.
Rizwan has now completed the first year of his apprenticeship and is
well on the way to a level 2 vocational qualification. He has had two pay
increases and has started driving lessons.
“
Rizwan
He has another two years to go before he is a fully qualified technician -
that’s VQ level 3.
