ter the initial steps of evagination. Subsequently, the rudimentary shell gland<br />

does not evaginate further but invaginates into the body of the animals.<br />

Figure 3B,D shows horizontal sections of embryos from both control and<br />

Pt-exposed groups. In both embryos, the anus can be recognized on the<br />

right side of the visceral sac. In the control, the visceral sac is covered by<br />

the mantle anlage, which, in turn, is covered by the shell. In the embryo<br />

from the platinum group, the mantle anlage has stopped growing and does<br />

not cover the visceral sac.<br />
