change <strong>in</strong> pumpage from 1956 to 1962 occurred <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Granite City <strong>area</strong>. Because of a serious decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>water</strong><br />

levels caused by heavy pumpage concentrated <strong>in</strong> a relatively<br />

small <strong>area</strong> and the severe drought dur<strong>in</strong>g 1952-<br />

1956, the Granite City <strong>St</strong>eel Company abandoned its<br />

wells <strong>in</strong> 1957 and began obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>water</strong> supplies from<br />

the Mississippi River. As a result, withdrawals of<br />

ground <strong>water</strong> dropped sharply from 30.1 mgd <strong>in</strong> 1956 to<br />

7.6 mgd <strong>in</strong> 1958, and gradually <strong>in</strong>creased to 9.5 mgd <strong>in</strong><br />

1962. Pumpage <strong>in</strong> the National City <strong>area</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1962 does<br />

not <strong>in</strong>clude pumpage necessary to de<strong>water</strong> a cut along an<br />

<strong>in</strong>terstate highway <strong>in</strong> construction near National City<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce this <strong>in</strong>formation was not available at the time this<br />

report was written.<br />

Of the 1962 total pumpage, withdrawals for public<br />

<strong>water</strong>-supply systems amounted to about 6.4 percent, or<br />

6.7 mgd; <strong>in</strong>dustrial pumpage was about 91.1 percent, or<br />

95.7 mgd; domestic pumpage was 2.3 percent, or 2.4<br />

mgd; and irrigation pumpage was 0.2 percent, or 0.2<br />

mgd.<br />

The major <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>in</strong> the <strong>East</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> <strong>area</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ground <strong>water</strong> are oil ref<strong>in</strong>eries, chemical plants, ore re-<br />
