by the process of trial and error. Several positions of<br />

River-Bed Areas of Infiltration to Well Fields<br />

Four well fields <strong>in</strong> the <strong>East</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> <strong>area</strong> are located<br />

close to the Mississippi River and derive most of<br />

their recharge from the <strong>in</strong>duced <strong>in</strong>filtration of surface<br />

<strong>water</strong>. The well fields are south of Alton <strong>in</strong> the Duck<br />

Lake <strong>area</strong>, near the confluence of the Wood River and<br />

the Mississippi River, west of Wood River, and west of<br />

Monsanto as shown <strong>in</strong> figure 57.<br />

One well field consist<strong>in</strong>g of a collector well and two<br />

artificial pack wells is owned by the Shell Oil Ref<strong>in</strong>ery<br />
