This project was supported by grants from Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
and by IUB.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Ullrich gave me the possibility to work on this project and
supported my studies with guidance and advice.
Dr. Beate Völksch, Prof. Ulrich Schwaneberg and Prof. Georgi Muskhelishvili
agreed to take part in my thesis committee and were always available for
discussion of the project.
I would like to thank our external cooperation partners:
Dr. Beate Völksch (Jena, Germany) started the investigations on the antagonist
Pss22d and agreed on a cooperation project on the investigation of biocontrol
mechanisms. Discussions with her and her group members Petra Büttner and
Sascha D. Braun significantely stimulated this project.
Prof. Dr. Dominique Expert (Paris, France) supplied me with the
Dikeya chrysanthemi strain for achromobactin production and siderophore
cross-feeding experiments were performed in her lab. Prof. Dr. Jean-Marie
Meyer (Strasbourg, France) allowed me to visit his laboratory and taught me
how to purify and analyse siderophores. Prof. Dr. Herbert Budzikiewicz
(Cologne, Germany) agreed to perform NMR-analysis of purified Pss22d
siderophore.
I would not have been able to accomplish the presented thesis without the
assistance of Dr. Helge Weingart. His most valuable recommendations and the
many discussions with him formed the basis for the presented results.
All present and past members of the AG Ullrich, I have to thank for their help as
well as for the great working atmosphere. A special thanks to Yvonne Braun,
for a “hurricane proven” friendship.
I would like to thank Marcus Lindemann for his patience while explaining
fluorescence measurements to a biologist.
I am deeply grateful to my family. Without your support, patience and
motivation I would not have been able to finish my studies.
