Minimise environmental impact The site has been located to minimise impact on the environment in particular, heritage and ecological issues. The proposed work is to be undertaken in an area where Kingsgrove Railway Station Group is listed under s.170 NSW State agency heritage register, however the site is outside of the heritage curtilage. Section 4.6 discusses the heritage impacts and mitigation measures in more detail. Also, ecological issues were considered during site selection and the site has been located so that there will be no impact on native vegetation during and post construction. Page 32 of 78
4 Environmental Impact & Risks 4.1 Landforms, Geology and Soils Existing Situation The proposed BTS site will be installed in a cleared, grassy area within RailCorp land, approximately 8 metres north of the track on the Airport & East Hills line. There has been significant disturbance in the area resulting from the establishment of the railway line, station buildings and platform. The site is located within the Disturbed Landscapes soil category which consists of level to hummocky terrain extensively disturbed by human activity including complete disturbance, removal or burial of soil. Original soil materials have been removed, greatly disturbed or buried, and soil, rock, building and waste materials may have been added. Soil management will be important during construction to minimise the risks to local waterways. The proposed area is not mapped as containing Acid Sulfate Soils. (Australian Soil Resource Information System) A desktop geological review was undertaken for this site. This review did not anticipate the presence of acid sulphate soils or other contaminated material on site and found the site was suitable for the proposed use. Since no contaminants are expected, the standard control measures described below are deemed adequate for this site. Prior to construction UGL will confirm ground conditions by: On-site inspections during pre-construction site reviews to confirm desk-top study predictions. The drilling of test bore-holes at all sites. Potential Impacts Approximately 60 square metres of ground will be disturbed during the proposed works. Soil and rock from the excavation that is not to be used for backfilling will be placed into skip bins and removed from the site. The foundation for the monopole will result in approximately five cubic metres of spoil that will be placed into a skip bin and removed from site at the completion of construction works. Excavation and trenching activities may result in erosion if appropriate mitigation measures are not in place. Soil erosion has the potential to destabilise landforms and deposit sediments in drainage systems and waterways. Sediment deposition and fine particles in suspension within waterways have direct impact on water quality and aquatic life. Given the site characteristics and the scope and size of the proposed work, it is anticipated that erosion and sediment risks is minimal and can be effectively managed through the Page 33 of 78
