A new dinosaur, Ceratonykus oculatus
gen. et sp. nov. (Parvicursoridae, Alvarezsauria),
from the Upper Cretaceous
(Baruungoyot Formation) of Mongolia
is described based on a fragmentary
skeleton. It differs from other alvarezsaurians
in many characters, including
the short femora, long tarsometatarsals,
and considerably reduced third
metatarsals. The carpometacarpals contain
spikelike bones. The natural endocast
of the new taxon shows large acoustic
tubercles, the ventral position of the
optic lobes in the midbrain, and the absence
of a vertical flexure at the brain
floor. The data obtained cast doubt on
the taxonomic position of alvarezsaurians
in the Theropoda.
The fossil fauna of the Santana Formation
comprises many distinct taxa,
but crocodylomorphs are poorly understood.
Here we describe a new specimen
that consists of a complete hind limb
found in the Crato Member, the basal
section of the Santana Formation. On the
basis of a comparative anatomical study
of the hind limb, whih shows no similarities
between MPSC-R1137 and other
crocodylomorphs from the Araripe Basin,
we tentatively classify this new
specimen as cf. Susisuchus sp., and provide
new anatomical information for this
rather derived crocodylomorph.
A Revision of the cranial morphology
of Middle and Late Permian East European
Dinomorpha (Theromorpha, Eotherapsida)
resulted in a clarification of
the taxonomic relationships within this
group. As the system was constructed,
four parameters, i.e., morphological,
biomorph, and geographical and stratigraphic
ranges, were taken into account
in each subordinate taxon. The taxon
Theromorpha is ranked as class, since it
was primarily formed as a pilidosic
group (covered with hair), in contrast to
the class Reptilia, a pholidosic group
(covered with scales).
Cretaceous Baruungoyot Formation of
the Khermin Tsav locality (southern
the new taxon and Bagaceratops
