CHAPTER 5<br />

<strong>Fishery</strong> – <strong>Puri</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> <strong>District</strong><br />

<strong>Puri</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> are the coastal districts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Orissa</strong> with <strong>Ganjam</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g 26 fish<strong>in</strong>g villages <strong>and</strong> 14<br />

fish l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g centers. An about 20,000 fishermen population is dependent on In-l<strong>and</strong>, Brackish<br />

Water <strong>and</strong> Mar<strong>in</strong>e fisheries <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> district. While <strong>Puri</strong> is hav<strong>in</strong>g 85 fish<strong>in</strong>g villages with a total<br />

fisherman population <strong>of</strong> 67,161 who are dependent on fishery as the ma<strong>in</strong> source <strong>of</strong> livelihood.<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g center <strong>in</strong> <strong>Puri</strong> district is 12. The total fish catch <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> district is<br />

14053.22 MT while that <strong>of</strong> <strong>Puri</strong> <strong>District</strong> is 25,000 MT (Provisional data – 2003-04, Directorate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fishery</strong>, <strong>Puri</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong>).<br />

5.1 Components <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fishery</strong><br />

<strong>Fishery</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Puri</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> district can be classified accord<strong>in</strong>g to the nature <strong>of</strong> the operation i.e.<br />

‘Capture <strong>and</strong> Culture’. Further, it can be divided on the type <strong>of</strong> water resource i.e. fresh water,<br />

mar<strong>in</strong>e water <strong>and</strong> brackish water. Mar<strong>in</strong>e water fishery may be further classified on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />

the distance <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g operation from the coastl<strong>in</strong>e. The major component <strong>of</strong> fishery <strong>in</strong> the district<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Puri</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> are the follow<strong>in</strong>g –<br />

1. Mar<strong>in</strong>e fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a. Coastal fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

b. Ocean fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

2. Freshwater fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

3. Brackish water fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

4. Fish culture<br />

5.1.1 Mar<strong>in</strong>e fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The total coastl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the 2 district is about 215 Km with <strong>Ganjam</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g a coastl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> 60 km <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Puri</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g a coastl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> 155 Km. The fishery activity is taken up <strong>in</strong> the entire coastl<strong>in</strong>e by the<br />

fishery villages located along the coastl<strong>in</strong>e. Traditional fish<strong>in</strong>g with catamarans <strong>and</strong> the country<br />

boat is a common parlance <strong>in</strong> normally all the villages but the new technology is on the rise <strong>in</strong> the<br />

bigger l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g centers where the advent <strong>of</strong> trawlers, Beach L<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g crafts (BLC) <strong>and</strong> Fiber<br />

Re<strong>in</strong>forced Plastic boat (FRP’s) are commonly present.<br />
