Draft Report on “<strong>Fishery</strong> Supply <strong>Cha<strong>in</strong></strong>”<br />

Confidential<br />

specific <strong>and</strong> hence varied value cha<strong>in</strong> can be demonstrated for the various categories <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fisherman.<br />

On the basis <strong>of</strong> the distance traversed, type <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g gear, NiMble has identified three different<br />

supply cha<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Puri</strong> from the perspective <strong>of</strong> “producers” as under –<br />

1. Traditional boat owners us<strong>in</strong>g catamaran <strong>and</strong> sail<br />

2. Boat owners us<strong>in</strong>g motorized craft<br />

3. Trawler owners<br />

The rationale for look<strong>in</strong>g at the supply cha<strong>in</strong> from these three players be<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

1) In NiMble’s op<strong>in</strong>ion these are the most important players as without them, the basic<br />

material will not be available.<br />

2) At least two <strong>of</strong> the above three are the target beneficiaries <strong>in</strong> OXFAM supported ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>tervention <strong>in</strong> the fishery sector <strong>in</strong> these two districts<br />

3) Research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>dicate that they are the most vulnerable groups with<strong>in</strong> the supply<br />

cha<strong>in</strong><br />

7.5.1 Traditional Boat Owners<br />

The traditional boat owners have a def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ct cha<strong>in</strong> due the nature <strong>of</strong> the catch. This<br />

can be related to the species caught, size <strong>of</strong> the species, availability <strong>of</strong> the species, etc.<br />

Normally the non-motorized boats operate on the coastal water <strong>in</strong> a periphery <strong>of</strong> 5 Km.<br />

The catch is smaller <strong>in</strong> size <strong>and</strong> is generic <strong>in</strong> nature. Another po<strong>in</strong>t worth mention<strong>in</strong>g is that<br />

due to the biological nature <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the species, the craft owners are able to catch few high<br />

value species. The supply cha<strong>in</strong> from the po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> moves the product as per their<br />

segment attributes.<br />

The ‘brown connectors’ <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g map depicts the supply cha<strong>in</strong> for the low value product<br />

<strong>and</strong> are dest<strong>in</strong>ed for the local market. The ‘red connectors’ are the channels <strong>of</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> the<br />

select few average value products to the larger domestic market on preference <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> these species. The ‘blue connectors’ are the l<strong>in</strong>ks show<strong>in</strong>g the high value product, which<br />

are <strong>in</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />
