6.1.1 Local Market<br />

Local markets are essentially the markets nearby the l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g centers (<strong>in</strong> the periphery <strong>of</strong> 25-30<br />

km accessible by bicycles), which <strong>in</strong>clude villages, haats <strong>of</strong> blocks <strong>and</strong> tehsils, sub division <strong>and</strong><br />

nearby towns. The dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> these markets is generally stable except for the deviations dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

special occasions e.g. marriages, festivals, rath yatra etc.<br />

The characteristics <strong>of</strong> these markets are –<br />

1. Dem<strong>and</strong> for the average to low value product is based on the availability.<br />

2. Purchas<strong>in</strong>g power <strong>of</strong> the consumer is the limit<strong>in</strong>g factor for consumption <strong>of</strong> high value<br />

product<br />

3. Number <strong>of</strong> sellers is limited.<br />

4. Dem<strong>and</strong> for the mar<strong>in</strong>e species is limited due to food habit <strong>of</strong> the community. Only limited<br />

species are <strong>in</strong> dem<strong>and</strong>.<br />

5. Dem<strong>and</strong> for the fresh water fish is higher than the mar<strong>in</strong>e species.<br />

6. High value product rarely enters the local market.<br />
