6.2 Product Segmentation<br />

Product segmentation is the process through which products hav<strong>in</strong>g similar aff<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>and</strong> nature<br />

cluster together <strong>and</strong> follows almost the same l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> growth, cater to the similar k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> market <strong>and</strong><br />

behave <strong>in</strong> a similar way under the forces <strong>of</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> supply. This leads to congressional<br />

mapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the product, which then can be clubbed together <strong>in</strong>to specific segments.<br />

In the fishery value cha<strong>in</strong>, the value <strong>of</strong> the product can be dist<strong>in</strong>ctly classified <strong>in</strong> four value slabs –<br />

1. Export value product<br />

2. High value product<br />

3. Average value product<br />

4. Low value product<br />

This classification is based on the primary study for the various traded species <strong>of</strong> the fish. The<br />

average price <strong>of</strong> the fish species is the average mean price <strong>of</strong> the species given by the<br />

respondent. The price <strong>of</strong> the species was spread on a web diagram to observe the congress<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

the species on price factor.<br />
