5.1.2 Freshwater Fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Freshwater fish<strong>in</strong>g is based on the <strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> water resources <strong>and</strong> is an important source <strong>of</strong> fish. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> water has been exploited for its aquatic resources by the communities to meet their food<br />

requirement <strong>and</strong> also is a means <strong>of</strong> livelihood to many.<br />

The total quantum <strong>of</strong> production from the fresh water fishery has been 21,223 MT annually <strong>in</strong> the<br />

two districts. The average annual production <strong>of</strong> fresh water fish is for <strong>Puri</strong> district is 15,971 MT<br />

while that <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> district is 5,252 MT.<br />

5.1.3 Brackish water Fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Puri</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ganjam</strong> district are endowed with the brackish water coastl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the Chilka lake. The<br />

unique natural water resource has resulted <strong>in</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> the brackish water diversity,<br />

which is different from both the fresh water <strong>and</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e water ecology. The contribution <strong>of</strong> prawn<br />

<strong>and</strong> shrimps from this resource is important from the economic po<strong>in</strong>t. The fish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Chilka<br />

Lake <strong>in</strong> both the districts is highly regulated by the government.<br />

The fish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the lake is permitted only through the traditional means us<strong>in</strong>g country boats <strong>and</strong><br />

catamarans. The trawlers <strong>and</strong> other big fish<strong>in</strong>g gears are not allowed. The traditional ways <strong>of</strong><br />

fish<strong>in</strong>g, which is still followed by the fish<strong>in</strong>g community <strong>in</strong> the lake, are –<br />

All these methods <strong>of</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g are specifically for the prawns <strong>and</strong> the shrimps, which are <strong>in</strong><br />

abundance <strong>in</strong> the natural habitat.<br />

The graph below gives the production from the Chilka Lake over the years <strong>and</strong> compares it with<br />

the overall all production <strong>of</strong> fishes <strong>and</strong> shrimps from the brackish water resource <strong>of</strong> the state. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the contribution from Chilka is because <strong>of</strong> the advent <strong>of</strong> the OBM’s <strong>and</strong> the IBM’s that<br />

has <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> number substantially.<br />

5.1.4 Fish culture<br />

The cultur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> fish species that are <strong>in</strong> high dem<strong>and</strong> has taken a big proposition now days <strong>in</strong> both<br />

the districts. Especially, the areas near the mouth <strong>of</strong> the rivers <strong>and</strong> nearby Chilka are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />
