negatively impact these ecosystems and marine life. Loss <strong>of</strong> coastal ecosystems such as coral<br />
reefs has a negative impact on marine fish catch since these ecosystems provide food and<br />
habitat for fish.<br />
Several <strong>of</strong> the 68 sewerage systems that are operated by the NWC were affected by the<br />
floods associated with the storm. In addition some 200 conventional pit latrines were<br />
washed out island-wide. Nutrient pollution in run<strong>of</strong>fs from sewage treatment plants, toilets<br />
and farms can affect coral reefs leading to excessive growth <strong>of</strong> algae which stifles reef<br />
growth.<br />
Many gullies overflowed their banks because <strong>of</strong> the build-up <strong>of</strong> silt and vegetation (Figure<br />
17).<br />
