Policy Regarding Renewable<br />

Energy<br />

The <strong>South</strong>-<strong>East</strong> Region strongly supports<br />

national and international initiatives for<br />

limiting emissions of greenhouse gases and<br />

encouraging the development of renewable<br />

energy sources.<br />

The <strong>South</strong>-<strong>East</strong> Region actively seeks to<br />

implement a share of national targets for<br />

renewable energy.<br />

The Council will seek to provide positively for<br />

the development of appropriate renewable<br />

energy sources, which makes use of the<br />

natural resources of the county in an<br />

environmentally acceptable manner.<br />

Provisions in Current Development<br />

<strong>Plan</strong> Relating to <strong>Bioenergy</strong><br />

The use of new forests in the Region to provide<br />

fuel for wood biomass energy production needs<br />

further examination as it is suggested that increased<br />

participation in this form of energy production could<br />

contribute both to a reduction in CO2 emissions<br />

and benefit the forest industry in the <strong>South</strong>-<strong>East</strong> by<br />

securing an outlet for wood produced in the Region.<br />

Policy ENV 17: Policy on Energy Usage &<br />

Renewable Energy It is the policy of the Council to<br />

encourage efforts to reduce energy usage across all<br />

sectors. The Council shall also endeavour to promote<br />

the use of renewable energy sources and support the<br />

development of renewable energy technology.<br />

The planning authority shall encourage the<br />

development of innovative and sustainable<br />

energy production, use and conservation<br />

practices such as bio-mass development,<br />

energy re-use and recovery from industrial<br />

and institutional sources and geothermal<br />

energy exploitation.<br />
