3.3.5. National Climate Change Strategy 2007-2012( 16 )<br />

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government published the new National Climate Change<br />

Strategy for 2007 through to 2012 in April 2007 and it set out the Government’s collective effort across all sectors to<br />

tackle climate change over the next five years. The measures outlined in the Strategy co-ordinate closely with the other<br />

key policy documents such as the Energy White Paper and the <strong>Bioenergy</strong> Action <strong>Plan</strong>.<br />

Summary of National Targets<br />

Heat: 5% of fuel used for heat purchases should be from renewables by 2010; 12% by 2020<br />

Electricity: Achievement of renewable penetration as a proportion of electricity consumption:<br />

15% by 2010; 33% by 2020.<br />

30% co-firing in peat stations with biomass by 2015<br />

Transport: 5.75% biofuels penetration by 2010 and 10% by 2020<br />

3.4. Government Incentive Schemes<br />

In order to achieve the ambitious targets for the deployment of renewable energy in the heat, electricity and transport<br />

sectors the Government has put in place a number of support schemes to encourage the change to renewable energy<br />

sources across all sectors. The Government is committed to providing long term funding for these schemes.<br />

3.4.1. Greener Homes Scheme( 17 )<br />

The Greener Homes Scheme, administered by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) provides assistance to homeowners who<br />

intend to purchase a new renewable energy heating system for either new or existing homes.<br />

Under the Scheme, grants are provided to homeowners who invest in new renewable energy based heating<br />

systems in the following categories:<br />

• Solar Heating<br />

• Solar hot water system and/or<br />

• Solar space heating system<br />

• Heat Pumps<br />

• Horizontal ground collector<br />

• Vertical ground collector<br />

• Water (well) to water<br />

• Air source<br />

• Wood Chip or Pellet Stoves – with or without integral boiler<br />

• Wood Chip or Pellet Boilers.<br />
