5. Have you ever encountered something unexpectedly? Try to<br />
use the word encountered when you tell about it. [Ask two or<br />
three students. If necessary, guide and/or rephrase students’<br />
responses: “Once, I encountered . . . ”]<br />
6. What’s the word we’ve been talking about? What part of<br />
speech is the word encountered?<br />
Use a Making Choices activity for follow-up. Directions: I am going<br />
to read several sentences. If the sentence describes someone who<br />
encountered, or unexpectedly came upon something or someone,<br />
say, “ encountered .” If the sentence describes<br />
someone who planned, or expected, to come upon something or<br />
someone, say, “That was planned.” [You may want to emphasize<br />
that the difference will be if the meeting was planned or not.]<br />
1. While at the grocery store, Sergio and his mother<br />
unexpectedly ran into Sergio’s teacher. (Sergio encountered<br />
his teacher.)<br />
2. Lisbeth and her friend met at the mall at 6 p.m., just as they<br />
had planned. (That was planned.)<br />
3. Patrice suddenly came upon a small snake while raking leaves<br />
in the backyard. (Patrice encountered a snake.)<br />
4. The guide promised that Alicia and the other explorers would<br />
see an elephant on their safari, and they did. (That was<br />
planned.)<br />
5. Dylan thought the puzzle was going to be easy to solve, but<br />
he came upon some unexpected difficulties while working<br />
with the middle pieces. (Dylan encountered difficulties.)<br />
