3. Trail Rid<strong>in</strong>g – this activity is for <strong>the</strong> experienced rider; travell<strong>in</strong>g distance is<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased as <strong>the</strong> ride is conducted at a very brisk pace.<br />

“It takes <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> circular rides return<strong>in</strong>g back to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t, or<br />

distance rides where <strong>the</strong> group rides from one dest<strong>in</strong>ation to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

technique.<br />

Equestrian Motivations<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to a 2004 Henley centre report for DEFRA on <strong>the</strong> horse <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> Great<br />

Brita<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> horse <strong>in</strong>dustry is fragmented and some stakeholders questioned <strong>the</strong><br />

notion <strong>of</strong> it be<strong>in</strong>g an ‘<strong>in</strong>dustry’ at all. This suggests a wide range <strong>of</strong> motivations.<br />

The report noted discord between ‘modernisers’ and ‘traditionalists’, friction over <strong>the</strong><br />

prioritisation <strong>of</strong> needs between <strong>the</strong> ‘happy hackers’ and <strong>the</strong> ‘elitist sports’, and<br />

discontent at <strong>the</strong> ‘grass roots’ level with regard to <strong>the</strong> ‘representativeness’ <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> national <strong>in</strong>dustry bodies.<br />

Landuse Consultants’ 2007 review <strong>of</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e and coastal recreation for SNH<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated that <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> recreation visits to <strong>the</strong> coast were day trips (87.5%),<br />

with much smaller proportions undertak<strong>in</strong>g short breaks / weekends (9.1%) and<br />

longer holidays (3.5%). These proportions are relatively consistent across <strong>the</strong><br />

specialist recreation activities covered by <strong>the</strong> survey, though a higher proportion <strong>of</strong><br />

some activities are undertaken on weekend or short break trips (e.g. angl<strong>in</strong>g or sub-<br />
