This evaluation assessed <strong>the</strong> ultimate impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 7 Stanes mounta<strong>in</strong> bike trail project<br />

on <strong>the</strong> South <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> and Scottish economies. The analysis shows that <strong>the</strong> <strong>impacts</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> project (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Phases 1 and 2) were:<br />

• just under 400,000 visitors (394,626) – comparable with <strong>the</strong> top twenty most<br />

popular visitor attractions <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, with similar visitor numbers to Stirl<strong>in</strong>g Castle;<br />

• a large non-local market at 80% <strong>of</strong> participants;<br />

• net additional <strong>impacts</strong> <strong>of</strong>:<br />

o £9.29m expenditure, 204.6 FTEs and £3.72m GVA <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

o £7.58m expenditure, 227.5 FTEs and £4.14m GVA <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>;<br />

As above, <strong>the</strong>se GVA figures appear too low to us <strong>in</strong> relation to FTEs (see Section 13.5<br />

and 13.6).<br />

This research report (No 88) presents <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> an <strong>economic</strong> impact study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mounta<strong>in</strong> Bike World Cup held at <strong>the</strong> Nevis Range mounta<strong>in</strong> bike course near Fort<br />

William, on 1-2 June 2002. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> report was to provide f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> host<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong> Bike World Cup and to establish <strong>the</strong><br />

impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> event on <strong>the</strong> economy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local area.<br />

The event management estimated that 7,778 people <strong>in</strong> total attended <strong>the</strong> event on <strong>the</strong><br />

Saturday and <strong>the</strong> Sunday. It was estimated that 896 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se visitors were local<br />

residents (11.5%), 1,453 visitors were day visitors from home from outside <strong>the</strong> local<br />

area (18.7%), and 5,429 were stay<strong>in</strong>g away from home while at <strong>the</strong> event (69.8%).<br />

Expenditure by visitors to <strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong> Bike World Cup was calculated us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

estimated total number <strong>of</strong> day visitors from home.<br />

Expenditure on accommodation by visitors stay<strong>in</strong>g away from home was £167,000,<br />

and daily expenditure by visitors stay<strong>in</strong>g away from home was £333,000. In total,<br />

expenditure by visitors to <strong>the</strong> local area as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong> Bike World Cup<br />

was estimated at £500,000, with expenditure by day visitors from home add<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r £16,000.<br />
