on day trips compared with 11% who were stay<strong>in</strong>g away from home.<br />

Water Sport Motivations<br />

The mar<strong>in</strong>e and coastal recreation review highlighted <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

heritage <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g mar<strong>in</strong>e and coastal recreation <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>. The quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

environment was <strong>the</strong> most important factor guid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> location for <strong>in</strong>formal<br />

recreation and was <strong>the</strong> most frequent ‘attractor’ <strong>in</strong> decisions to visit <strong>the</strong> coast. For<br />

specialist recreation, activity specific factors, proximity to home and ease <strong>of</strong> access<br />

were <strong>the</strong> most important factors overall, though <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment was<br />

<strong>the</strong> next most important issue.<br />
