4.3 Game and coarse angl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The Economic Impact <strong>of</strong> Game and Coarse Angl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> (Glasgow Caledonian<br />

University and Cogentsi, 2004).<br />

Contractor: Glasgow Caledonian University (Alan Radford, Ge<strong>of</strong>f Ridd<strong>in</strong>gton, John<br />

Anderson) and Cogentsi (Hervey Gibson).<br />

Client: Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department<br />

Study Objective:<br />

• To assess <strong>the</strong> <strong>economic</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> game and coarse angl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Research Method:<br />

The study encompassed <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g elements:<br />

• Literature review;<br />

• Discussions with stakeholder groups;<br />

• Survey <strong>of</strong> anglers;<br />

• Survey <strong>of</strong> Fishery Boards and owners;<br />

• Creation <strong>of</strong> Fisheries and Angler databases;<br />

• Economic impact analysis.<br />

The survey <strong>of</strong> anglers had two components:<br />

• Mount<strong>in</strong>g a questionnaire on a website;<br />

• Distribut<strong>in</strong>g a paper version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> questionnaire through fish<strong>in</strong>g clubs, tackle<br />

shops, proprietors, etc.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 920 questionnaires were distributed with a response rate <strong>of</strong> 32.3% (297<br />

questionnaires returned).<br />

Geographical scope: <strong>Scotland</strong>, with a regional breakdown <strong>of</strong> key f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs. The<br />

regional breakdown was:<br />

• Dumfries and Galloway;<br />

• The Borders;<br />

• Highland, Moray, and Argyll and Bute;<br />

• North East <strong>Scotland</strong>;<br />

• Central <strong>Scotland</strong>;<br />
