4.6 O<strong>the</strong>r studies<br />

• The trips most likely to have lasted 4 or more nights <strong>in</strong>cluded those<br />

undertaken for game fish<strong>in</strong>g or deer stalk<strong>in</strong>g, while <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> coarse<br />

angl<strong>in</strong>g and pheasant shoot<strong>in</strong>g trips were <strong>of</strong> a shorter duration.<br />

• In terms <strong>of</strong> places <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>, respondents who lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> were <strong>the</strong> most<br />

likely to <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong>ir most recent trip had lasted less than 4 nights while<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational visitors were more likely to have spent longer <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

• In around two-thirds <strong>of</strong> trips country sports were <strong>the</strong> only trip purpose (63%)<br />

and this was more likely to have been <strong>the</strong> case dur<strong>in</strong>g short breaks (73%).<br />

• In most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g trips (32%) country sports were <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>, but not <strong>the</strong><br />

only purpose while on a very small proportion <strong>of</strong> occasions trips <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

country sports but not as a ma<strong>in</strong> purpose (4%).<br />

• The country sport was most likely to be <strong>the</strong> only trip purpose when salmon or<br />

coarse angl<strong>in</strong>g was undertaken and <strong>in</strong> trips <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g deer stalk<strong>in</strong>g or wood<br />

pigeon, pheasant, partridge or wild fowl shoot<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• The country sport was more likely to be one <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> reasons for <strong>the</strong><br />

trip when trout angl<strong>in</strong>g, sea angl<strong>in</strong>g or grouse shoot<strong>in</strong>g was undertaken.<br />

• For around half <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational visitors <strong>the</strong> country sport was <strong>the</strong> only reason<br />

for <strong>the</strong> trip, while a similar sized proportion stated that it was <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>, but not<br />

<strong>the</strong> only, purpose.<br />

• In addition to <strong>the</strong> country sport activity undertaken, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g percentages<br />

<strong>of</strong> respondents reported that <strong>the</strong>y, or members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir party, had carried out<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g activities dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trip:<br />

Shopp<strong>in</strong>g for gifts 36%<br />

Visit<strong>in</strong>g castles and o<strong>the</strong>r historic sites 29%<br />

Sightsee<strong>in</strong>g by car 28%<br />

Hik<strong>in</strong>g/hill walk<strong>in</strong>g 28%<br />

Bird/wildlife watch<strong>in</strong>g 25%<br />

Golf<strong>in</strong>g 13%<br />

Visit<strong>in</strong>g museums, art galleries, etc 13%<br />

Watersports/boat<strong>in</strong>g 8%<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> field sports studies reviewed above, it is evident from our<br />

literature search and assessment that a considerable number <strong>of</strong> local area studies<br />

have been carried out. For example:<br />

• An Assessment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Economic Impact <strong>of</strong> Water-Related Recreation and Tourism<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spey Catchment. 2003. Glasgow Caledonian University and University <strong>of</strong><br />

Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, 2004.<br />

This assessment found that anglers contributed £10.9m to <strong>the</strong> local economy,<br />

support<strong>in</strong>g 367 jobs, with water sports (primarily canoe<strong>in</strong>g) contribut<strong>in</strong>g £1.7m<br />

locally, and support<strong>in</strong>g 48 jobs.<br />
