The <strong>College</strong> and its <strong>Members</strong>hip 9<br />

Edmund’s as a college. Apart from the Bursar and the Dean, the senior<br />

Fellows are not paid a salary by the <strong>College</strong>, but give their services<br />

gratuitously and on a part-time basis. Any privileges <strong>of</strong> accommodation or<br />

entertainment they may have are paid <strong>for</strong> by the <strong>College</strong> endowment,<br />

which also contributes to overheads on their behalf.<br />

The Fellowship comprises Fellows and Research Fellows. Fellows are<br />

normally holders <strong>of</strong> academic posts in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cambridge. Some<br />

hold senior administrative <strong>of</strong>fices. Research Fellows, who are normally postdoctoral,<br />

have to a greater or lesser extent some support from the <strong>College</strong><br />

endowment. Fellows and Research Fellows have corporate responsibility with<br />

the Master <strong>for</strong> the government and administration <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong>. The title <strong>of</strong><br />

Honorary Fellow is given to persons who render or have rendered signal<br />

service to the <strong>College</strong>. Visiting Fellows are scholars <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essorial standing<br />

from other universities who have been elected into Visiting Fellowships <strong>for</strong><br />

up to one year <strong>of</strong> sabbatical leave in Cambridge. Emeritus Fellows are Fellows<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> a certain seniority who have reached the retirement age. Life<br />

Fellows are Fellows <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> a certain seniority who have reached the<br />

retirement age and who have made an outstanding contribution to the life<br />

and work <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong>. Bye Fellows are persons whose election appears to<br />

the Governing Body to be in the interests <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong>. Fellow Commoner<br />

status is given <strong>for</strong> such a period as is appropriate to any person who engages<br />

in special activity approved by the Governing Body.<br />

1.2.2 Senior <strong>Members</strong><br />

The status <strong>of</strong> Senior Member is given by the <strong>College</strong> normally to members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> some standing and to Directors <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>udies.<br />

1.2.3 Visiting Scholars<br />

These are teachers in other universities and colleges who have been given<br />

membership <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong> Edmund’s during their sabbatical leaves.<br />

1.2.4 Associate <strong>Members</strong><br />

These are research workers temporarily attached to a <strong>University</strong><br />

department or associated institution who are <strong>of</strong>fered membership <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>College</strong> <strong>for</strong> the duration <strong>of</strong> the tenure <strong>of</strong> their appointment.<br />

1.2.5 <strong>St</strong>udents or Junior <strong>Members</strong><br />

<strong>St</strong>udent <strong>Members</strong> are the graduate, undergraduate and affiliated students<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> in statu pupillari (see 2.8 and glossary).<br />

The graduate student members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong> fall into two categories:<br />

(1) Research students who are taking courses leading to research degrees<br />

such as the Ph.D, M.Phil., and some Diplomas.<br />

(2) Other graduate students who are taking courses leading to various<br />

postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates such as the LL.M.,<br />

the Certificate in Education, the Certificate <strong>of</strong> Advanced <strong>St</strong>udy,<br />

clinical degrees and some Diplomas.
