Catering Arrangements 47<br />
<strong>College</strong> are warmly encouraged to attend these ceremonies, which are<br />
advertised on the <strong>College</strong> Notice Board. The fact that Fellows on these<br />
occasions will be dressed in <strong>for</strong>mal evening wear <strong>for</strong> the subsequent dinner<br />
does not affect the dress requirement <strong>for</strong> other members at the dinner.<br />
Please see the notes on individual categories <strong>of</strong> meal regarding the<br />
wearing <strong>of</strong> academic gowns (sometimes festal ‘Scarlet’, see 2.5) on<br />
particular occasions.<br />
<strong>Members</strong> in need <strong>of</strong> advice about matters <strong>of</strong> dress <strong>for</strong> dining should<br />
contact either the Senior Tutor or the <strong>St</strong>eward.<br />
8.9.2 Customs<br />
<strong>Members</strong> are asked to note the various customs associated with the<br />
different categories <strong>of</strong> event (see 8.10). On <strong>for</strong>mal occasions, the CR bell is<br />
sounded be<strong>for</strong>e the meal, and diners follow the Master, or presiding Fellow,<br />
into the Hall following the invitation given by the Fellows’ <strong>St</strong>eward. The<br />
attention <strong>of</strong> members is particularly drawn to the requirement that, at<br />
<strong>College</strong> Guest Nights and other <strong>for</strong>mal dinners, there is a <strong>for</strong>mal end to the<br />
meal and diners should not leave the Hall during the meal without the<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> the Master or presiding Fellow (see 8.10.4).<br />
Smoking and photography are never permitted in the Dining Hall.<br />
Mobile phones should be switched <strong>of</strong>f be<strong>for</strong>e entering the Dining Hall.<br />
The CR is used <strong>for</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee and port after dinner on the evenings <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
Guest Nights and other <strong>for</strong>mal dinners.<br />
8.10 CATEGORIES OF MEAL<br />
The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers ten categories <strong>of</strong> meal. These are (in reverse order <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong>mality):<br />
(a) Regular meals: breakfast/lunch/dinner<br />
(b) Sunday Lunch<br />
(c) Formal Hall<br />
(d) Sports Dinner<br />
(e) <strong>College</strong> Guest Nights<br />
(f) Christmas Dinner<br />
(g) Supervisors’ Dinners<br />
(h) Inaugural and Matriculation; Beginning <strong>of</strong> Year; Graduands’ Dinners<br />
(i) <strong>St</strong> Edmund’s Feast<br />
(j) Norfolk Commemoration.<br />
Each category <strong>of</strong> meal has its own distinctive character, and<br />
arrangements <strong>for</strong> dress, customs, guest entitlement, and booking vary.
