notified and fire engines will be dispatched to the <strong>College</strong> immediately (see<br />

4.1.5, 4.1.6).<br />

Calling the Fire Brigade: 999 must be dialled from the nearest telephone.<br />

No coins or phone cards are needed. When the operator answers, say:<br />

‘Emergency. Fire at <strong>St</strong> Edmund’s <strong>College</strong>, Mount Pleasant, Cambridge.’<br />

<strong>St</strong>ate whether the fire is and be prepared to answer any further questions.<br />

To avoid any confusion with Edmund House, Milton, the words ‘Mount<br />

Pleasant’ must be included. As soon as possible in<strong>for</strong>m the <strong>College</strong> Office<br />

during <strong>of</strong>fice hours and the Security Porter or Resident Fellow outside<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice hours. (see also 4.2)<br />

4.1.4 Extinction <strong>of</strong> the Fire<br />

(1) This is the business <strong>of</strong> the Fire Service.<br />

(2) Hand extinguishers may be used by anyone at the scene <strong>of</strong> the fire<br />

who considers that the outbreak could be controlled by such means<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e the arrival <strong>of</strong> the Fire Service. But the person who discovers<br />

the fire should not attempt to use an extinguisher be<strong>for</strong>e telephoning<br />

the Fire Service.<br />

4.1.5 Evacuation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong><br />

(1) Exit: On hearing the fire alarm, everyone must evacuate the building<br />

by the nearest exit. Do not under any circumstances use the lifts. At<br />

night, it may be necessary to take out some clothing or covering, but<br />

there should be no delay to collect private property. For those<br />

evacuating the building via the main staircase to the reception area,<br />

the first person to arrive at the front door should break the fire panel<br />

glass and retrieve the key. The front door should be unlocked and<br />

secured by the hook and eye bolt, allowing everyone to pass through<br />

the door quickly.<br />

(2) Evacuation: Everyone should proceed immediately to the Fire<br />

Assembly Point posted in the relevant building. They should keep to<br />

the right on all stairs and corridors. When the alarm is sounded, no<br />

one should remain inside the building. Do not attempt to re-enter<br />

the building <strong>for</strong> any reason.<br />

4.1.6 At the Fire Assembly Point<br />

(1) Assembly Points: On arrival at the Norfolk Building Fire Assembly<br />

Point, occupants <strong>of</strong> each wing (A, B, C, D, E and F) should <strong>for</strong>m a<br />

line in front <strong>of</strong> their own staircase letter <strong>for</strong> the roll call.<br />

(2) Non-Residents and Visitors: Non-resident members and visitors<br />

should use Assembly Point C. Fellows and <strong>College</strong> Office staff should<br />

use Assembly Point C. Kitchen and Cleaning staff should gather at<br />

Assembly Point F.<br />

(3) Residents <strong>of</strong> Bene’t House should remain in their own grounds.
