Services for Schlesinger;<br />

Industry Leader in S.A.<br />

NETW YORK—Funeral services for M. A.<br />

Schlesinger, industry pioneer who operated<br />

theatre, radio station and newspaper enterprises<br />

in South Africa, were held at the<br />

Riverside chapel Tuesday (24). Schlesinger<br />

died here February 23 after a long illness.<br />

Schlesinger looked after the New York<br />

interests of his firm. International Varieties<br />

and Theatrical Agency, while his brother, the<br />

late Joseph Schlesinger, had conducted the<br />

business in Johannesburg, S. A. In the early<br />

days of talking pictures, the Schlesingers<br />

headed General Talking Pictures Corp., which<br />

marketed DeForest Photophone.<br />

He is survived by his wife, Betty, two sisters,<br />

Mrs. Esther Greenwald and Mrs. Elizabeth<br />

Stark, and a nephew, John Schlesinger<br />

jr., who directs the South African activities<br />

of the company. John jr. had been in New<br />

York when his uncle first became ill last<br />

fall but returned to South Africa when he<br />

appeared to be recovering.<br />

Colosseum Members Sign<br />

Affidavit of Loyalty<br />

NEW YORK—Tlie Colosseum of Motion<br />

Picture Salesmen has forwarded a "loyalty"<br />

affidavit to all its members as an answer to<br />

the charges of Communism hurled at the<br />

picture industry, according to David Beznor,<br />

general counsel.<br />

The affidavits, which will require notarizing,<br />

declare; 1— I am a member of the salesmen's<br />

union named below. 2—I am not a<br />

member of the Communist party or affiliated<br />

with such party. 3—I do not believe in,<br />

am not a member of, nor do I support any<br />

organization that believes in or teaches the<br />

overthrow of the U.S. Government by force<br />

or by any illegal or unconstitutional methods.<br />

Ray Wild, president of Colosseum, sent a<br />

letter to President Eisenhower informing him<br />

of the action, which was approved by the<br />

entire membership.<br />

20th-Fox Votes 25c Dividend<br />

NEW YORK—Directors of 20th-Fox have<br />

voted a quarterly dividend of 25 cents payable<br />

March 28 to stockholders of record<br />

March 10.<br />

Lady" for 20th-Fox. arrived from Hollywood<br />

en route to a European vacation .<br />

Frederick Brisson, producer-husband of<br />

Rosalind Ru.ssell, returned to Hollywood after<br />

attending the opening of "Wonderful Town,"<br />

in which his wife opened Wednesday i25>.<br />

ALso on hand to welcome Miss Russell back<br />

to the Broadway stage were Arleen Whelan,<br />

who returned from Rio de Janeiro and who<br />

is featured in Miss Ru.ssell's new picture,<br />

"Never Wave at a WAC"; Cesar Romero with<br />

Betty Furness, former screen star who is now<br />

prominent in TV, and Paulette Goddard.<br />

Spencer Tracy, MGM star, and Gottfried<br />

Reinhardt, who will make "Flight to the<br />

Island" abroad, sailed on the Queen Mary for<br />

London and Paris, where they will confer with<br />

Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, authors<br />

of the .screenplay . . . Howard Hawks, producer-director,<br />

and his bride Dee Hartford<br />

were on the same boat Milland, his<br />

wife and their two children, Daniel and<br />

Victoria, flew in from a European vacation<br />

Fields, British star, and her<br />

husband Boris Alperovici flew in from Rome<br />

and Fi-ank Sinatra flew in from London en<br />

Dorothy Stickney left for the coast to resume<br />

filming of "The Great Diamond Robbery,"<br />

Over LOOO Leaders Honor<br />

Hope at Friars Dinner<br />

NEW YORK—More than 1,000 leaders from<br />

show business, industry, government and the<br />

armed services attended the New York Friars<br />

dinner in honor of Bob Hope at the Waldorf-<br />

Astoria Friday night (27).<br />

Pioceeds of the $50 a plate dinner were<br />

tui-ned over to the United Cerebral Palsy fund.<br />

George Jessel was toastmaster and he began<br />

the proceedings by making Hope the target<br />

for some scientific ribbing.<br />

Among those on the dais were Eric Johnston,<br />

Bernard Baruch, Adolph Zukor, FYed<br />

Allen, Danny Kaye, Milton Berle, Senator<br />

W. Stuart Symington, Maj. Gen. Emmett<br />

O'Donnell, NBC President Frank White, RCA<br />

Head of Cinema Lodge<br />

NEW YORK—Burton E. Robbins was<br />

elected president of Cinema lodge of B'nai<br />

B'rith at a meeting in the Hotel Astor held<br />

Tuesday (24). Installation ceremonies for the<br />

new president and other officers will be<br />

held April 8 at a presidents luncheon In<br />

the Astor.<br />
