The Boston Press club hosted its third<br />

annual Amasa Howe award dinner at the<br />

Sheraton Plaza hotel with 900 filling the<br />

main ballroom at the banquet. James B.<br />

Suzan Ball, Universal star, escaped injury<br />

when the car in which she was riding collided<br />

with another in Becket, Mass. John McGrail,<br />

publicist, was driving Miss Ball to Boston for<br />

a round of personal appearances, radio and<br />

press interviews in behalf of her film, "City<br />

Beneath the Sea."<br />

'Peter Pan' Grosses<br />

Huge 300 at Boston<br />

BOSTON—"Peter Pan" in its first week at<br />

the Memorial was the standout, with "The<br />

Bad and the Beautiful" at the two Loew's<br />

houses not far behind. Both films were held<br />

over. "The Jazz Singer" pulled 125 at the<br />

Paramount and Fenway.<br />

NEW HAVEN<br />

The new Bowl Drive-In at West Haven, completed<br />

early last fall but never used because<br />

of continuing legal litigation, will finally<br />

open in the spring, it appeared following a<br />

superior court ruling last week. Judge Edward<br />

J. Daly approved an application granted by<br />

State Police Commissioner Edward J. Hickey<br />

to operate film equipment on the premises.<br />

Fishman Theatres, operator of the indoor<br />

Rivoli, also in West Haven, had appealed<br />

Hickey's action. The issue in the case. Judge<br />

Daly .said in his memorandum, "in no way<br />

raised any question as to the necessity for a<br />

certificate" i.ssued to the outdoor theatre by<br />

the state traffic commission when it found<br />

the drive-in's location "would not imperil<br />

the safety of the public." In its appeal, the<br />

Fishman chain claimed its rights as owners<br />

of nearby real estate were endangered and<br />

asked denial of the Bowl appUcation.<br />

Jim Tobin, former manager of the Warner,<br />

Bridgeport, who took a seven-month leave,<br />

has returned to work, replacing Al Schleicher,<br />

who resigned . 3-D<br />

has been appointed manager of the Warner<br />

Palace, Toirington. He was a.ssistant at the<br />

Roger Sherman when he first came here . . .<br />

Universal and the Paramount Theatre ran<br />

spot announcements on WNHC-TV for "City<br />

Beneath the Sea," opening at the latter house<br />

on the 11th.<br />

HARTFORD—An "all-dimension" screen,<br />

recently put in at the Burnside Theatre, East<br />

Hartford, will be installed in other Connecticut<br />

theatres soon, according to MorrLs Keppner<br />

and Barney Tarantul. partners in the<br />

Burnside Theatre Corp.<br />

Alex Gottlieb has signed Glenn Ford to star<br />

in his original western for Warner Bros,<br />

called "5 Bullet^s."<br />
