T arry Woodin, Wellsboro exhibitor, has prepared<br />

several records of organ music.<br />

which he hopes to sell to theatres for use in<br />

show breaks. The records, which will retail<br />

for a nominal price—now set at about 50<br />

cents for a two-side platter, will be free of<br />

any tax to music groups such as Ascap . . .<br />

Francis R. Smith's being named new assistant<br />

boss of the Democratic city committee<br />

recalls an incident which occurred when he<br />

ran for Congress. Oscar Neufeld and Jim<br />

Clark were both in the film delivery business<br />

and Columbia was releasing the film. "Mr.<br />

Smith Goes to Washington." At Clark's suggestion,<br />

Neufeld gathered together 1,000<br />

posters for the film and he plastered them<br />

over Smith's district to help in the campaign.<br />

And Smith did go to Washington!<br />

M&S Attractions has filed notice of its<br />

intention to file articles of incorporation.<br />

Goldwyn's Life Pointed<br />

Up by Senator Carlson<br />

WASHINGTON — Samuel Goldwyn's life<br />

story was pointed up by Senator Prank<br />

Carlson (Rep.) of Kansas, who inserted his<br />

remarks into the Congressional Record February<br />

18. The senator pointed up Goldwn's<br />

life as a typical example of the American way<br />

of life. Senator Carlson's remarks followed<br />

the sentiments expre.ssed by Rep. Ben F.<br />

Jensen (Rep.) of Iowa February 9, which were<br />

also inserted in the Congressional Record.<br />

Louis Wakshul in New Post<br />

Of Allied Buying Service<br />

PHILADELPHIA—Louis Wakshul has been<br />

put in charge of the film payment department<br />

of the Allied Buying & Booking Service.<br />

Jack Smith, independent theatre operator,<br />

is the new booker in the service.<br />

Sidney E. Samuelson, president, and Roy<br />

Sullender, executive buyer and booker, explained<br />

that this would strengthen the service<br />

as the organization expands.<br />

Start on Maryland Airer<br />

WASHINGTON—Ground has been broken<br />

on the Marlboro pike in nearby Maryland<br />

one-half mile from the District line for a<br />

new de luxe drive-in to be operated by Sidney<br />

Lust Theatres. Opening date has been set<br />

for April 1. The drive-in was designed by<br />

Theodore Rogvoy of Detroit. Sidney Lust<br />

Theatres operates two other drive-ins. one at<br />

Beltsville, Md., and one at Hampton, Va..<br />

as well as eight indoor theatres.<br />

Reject Drive-In Petition<br />

BALTIMORE—A petition for a special permit<br />

to allow construction of a drive-in theatre<br />

at Jarrettsville pike and Paper Mil! road<br />

has been rejected by the county zoning commissioner.<br />

Applicants for the special permit<br />

were Abraham Goldberg, owner of the property,<br />

and the Rltz Enterprises, contract purchaser.<br />

•The Variety Club held its traditional thankyou<br />

luncheon for women who worked on<br />

the 1952 welfare awards drive. Pre.sent at the<br />

Shoreham hotel affair were members of the<br />

board of governors. The hostess was Mrs.<br />

Sara S. Young, chairman of the women's committee,<br />

which included the wives and daughters<br />

of barkers and women employes of local<br />

film exchanges and theatre organizations.<br />

construction at Robbinsville, N.J., in the outskirts<br />

of Trenton for W. Brock Whitlock, general<br />

manager of Olden Theatre, Inc.<br />

Opening<br />

is planned for May 15. The 16-acre tract Is<br />

located on Route 130. dual highway connecting<br />
