Chicago Solon Opposes
Police Film Censorship
CHICAGO—Alderman Leon Depres of the
Fifth ward has emphatically expressed his
views on advance viewing of motion pictures
by the police censor board. In bolstering his
statement, the alderman pointed out that
legitimate theatre plays are never viewed
until opening night, and then only by a single
officer. He added that films should not be
singled out for full advance treatment.
He declared, "The whole procedure is unconstitutional
and the board is unqualified."
Depres also expressed the belief that the
$70,000 taken from city budget funds for
police movie censorship would be more profitably
spent if more police officers are put on
the streets. The alderman stated he figures
that two banned movies, "The Miracle" and
"Game of Love," now in the courts, may
settle the whole thing.
James Cagney and Robert Wagner will play
the male leads in 20th-Fox's mystery drama,
"The Wedding Clock."
Variety Tent 24 Installs
Officers for Coming Year
CHARLOTTE—New officers
and directors
of Variety Tent 24 were installed at the
annual organization banquet held at Hotel
Charlotte. The occasion honored personnel
of the club-sponsored eye clinic in the Professional
Bldg. Robert H. Alander was toastmaster
for the event, which was attended by
some 200 members and their wives.
J. Francis White was installed as chief
barker and Charles Trexler as first assistant.
