Experts See Little Chance
Of Ruining Magnetic Film
CLEVELAND— Although it is possible that
under the new MGM dual purpo.se print
policy that a magnetic print might become
demagnetized by a subsequently run optical
print, the chances of this happening are very
remote. A survey of all local theatre supply
dealers, theatre engineers and officials of the
operators' union indicates that with normal
precaution there is no danger of ruining a
magnetic print.
Among preventive measures listed by these
experts are installation of a special gadget
to demagnetize the projector, substitution of
nylon rollers for metal rollers and, most important
of all, instruction of the projectionist
in the proper use of the changeover from a
magnetic to an optical print. It was pointed
out in the survey that while nylon rollers
will help in the demagnetizing process, they
have no effect on the steel sprockets and
other metal parts of the projection machine
which must be scientifically demagnetized.
How often should a projector be demagnetized?
There seems to be a difference of
opinion here. Some said this process should
be done as often as once a week. Others said
that every six months is often enough.
