Editorial on Bachelors
Promotes 'Tender Trap'
HARTFORD — Under the heading of
"Bachelor's Life," the Herald, afternoon daily
in neighboring New Britain, commented,
editorially:
•The life of a single gentleman li.e.,
bachelor) is a much maligned, much misunderstood
existence. Unlike Hollywood, a
bachelor's day is very prosaic, featuring such
sterling things as work, three squares and
visiting relatives. Typical in a bachelor's life
is the latter, when somebody like Aunt Clara
bustles into the house with a friendly smile,
a hello for mother, hello for father, hello for
little sister, hello for little brother, and you
sneer—why aren't you married yet?
"Inevitably, there is a conversation exchange
which goes something like this:
" T have a wonderful girl for you to meet.'
"Very non-committal: 'Oh.'
" 'Yes, she is very attractive, has lots of
personality and is extremely talented.'
" 'So, why i.sn't she married?'
"Hollywood, if our advisers are correct, does
not take the same cynical view of a
bachelor's life. In films such as 'The Tender
Trap,' now making the rounds of picture
palaces, the life of a bachelor is one of
continual women, wine, women and reckless,
gay adventures.
"But maybe we're being unfair about Hollywood's
views. There was the film about that
bachelor chap, 'Marty,' for instance."
