Lux Tlieatrc at Joplin a new RCA<br />

Dynalite widescreen. The Uptown at Sweet<br />

Springs, operated by Charles Thomas, was<br />

also furnished a Dynalite screen and complete<br />

Cinemascope equipment. MTS installed<br />

Cinemascope lenses in Joe Ghosen's Uptown<br />

at Sedalia and RCA Brenkert projectors.<br />

Pour pairs of lenses went to the Commonwealth<br />

circuit and two pairs of CinemaScope<br />

lenses to Bob Fellers of the Mid-Central circuit<br />

at Manhattan.<br />

Carol Cook, secretary at Universal for the<br />

past six months, starts January 3 in the<br />

Buena Vista office as .secretary to Tommy<br />

Thompson. She started on Filmrow at Universal,<br />

then spent some time at Commonwealth<br />

before returning to Universal . . . Dick<br />

Durwood of Durwood Theatres is on vacation<br />

to move his family into a new house in<br />

Jarboe Circle. Stan Durwood spends two days<br />

a week in Wichita looking after the details<br />

for KEDD-TV . B. Smith, director of<br />

publicity and advertising for Commonwealth,<br />

made a trip to Yankton, S. D. H. E. Jameyson,<br />

chairman, was in town for a lx)ard<br />

meeting. Ray Holmes, district manager, was<br />

in from Lawrence.<br />

E. C. Rhoden sr., president of National<br />

Theatres, is in Europe on a combined business<br />

and pleasure trip. He is expected back here<br />

for the holidays. Fox Midwest had about<br />

76.000 votes in the Audience Awards. These<br />

also selected James Dean, Peggy Lee and<br />

Tab Hunter but "A Man Called Peter" was<br />

their choice for the best picture and June<br />

Allyson their top female star . . Darrel<br />

Presnell, booker for District Manager Fred<br />

Souttar. has been in the hospital because of<br />

an eye injury suffered while cutting up<br />

kindling. Julie, daughter of LeRoy Nichols,<br />

manager of the Regent Theatre at Wellington,<br />

Kas., is getting along fine after hospitalization<br />

for what at first appeared to be<br />

polio. Bill Belton's son is also home from the<br />

hospital. Belton manages the Buford at<br />

Arkansas City.<br />

Nick Kotsis, who still lives at Holden, Mo.,<br />

although the Holden Theatre has closed, was<br />

in booking for the Oswego Theatre at Oswego,<br />

Kas., which he still manages . . . Christmas<br />

Cartoon and Candy Carnivals are being used<br />

by Fox Midwest Theatres for the holiday vacation<br />

days. Lyle Holman of the People's<br />

Theatre at Chanute originated the plan of<br />

giving candy bar prizes for certain theatre<br />

stubs at the concession counter. Rock-<br />

Around-the-CIock watch parties are also<br />

being featured and a playing combination of<br />

the Audience Awards pictures, "East of Eden"<br />

and "Battle Cry" is paying off at the boxoffice<br />

as similar- treatment with Academy<br />

Awards did.<br />

Rem to Be Remodeled<br />

REMINGTON, IND.—The Rem Theatre,<br />

whicii was purchased several weeks ago by<br />

Charles Lane from H. A. Heyers of Morocco,<br />

was scheduled to reopen after extensive remodeling<br />

and equipment installation.<br />

Watchdog Named by Berger<br />

MINNEAPOLIS — Bennie Berger, North<br />

Central Allied president, Tuesday was to<br />

name a "watchdog" to represent the National<br />

Allied emergency defense committee, of which<br />

Berger is chairman, in gathering testimony<br />

for the Senate hearing on film rentals and<br />

to help protect exhibitor interests. All other<br />

Allied units also will have such "watchdogs."<br />
