R. U. Brown Sees No Threat
To Freedom of the Press
From Eastern Edition
NEW YORK—Robert U.
Brown, president
and editor of Editor & F*ublisher, is not worrying
about any threat of press censorship as a
result of the Motion Picture Ass'n of America
statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee's
Subconunittee on Constitutional Rights.
The MPAA statement said that the Supreme
Court's failure to eliminate pre-censorship
of films after including them among
the media of information had "seriously
eroded the freedom of the press."
Brown asserts that the courts "would
quickly correct any interpretation such as
the one held by the MPAA" because Supreme
Court decisions over a period of 150 years had
upheld the freedom of the press.
Brown added that he was sympathetic to
the film industry's anti-censorship moves and
said the 1952 decision in "The Miracle Case"
was a "positive one for the film industry, but
cannot be considered a negative one with
respect to other media."
Sign Garage Lease
For Boston Common
From New Englond Edition
BOSTON—A contract and lease for the
construction and 40-year operation of a parking
garage under Boston Common has been
signed at long last by Mayor Hynes and
Motor Park officials. Actual work will start
on the project, which will have a capacity
of 3,600 cars, by March 15. The cost is
established at between ten and eleven million.
Mayor Hynes hailed the signing of the contracts
as "the culmination of many years of
waiting for this project which is so necessary
for the improvement of Boston with respect to
its parking facilities and its shopping and
theatre areas."
Downtow'n theatre managers have long
awaited this step in the city's desire to make
available more space for auto parking. One
manager of a first run house said, on hearing
the news that the garage is at last to be
a reality, "This is the most heartening news
we downtown managers have had since the
reduction of the admission tax. The parking
facilities in this city have been ridiculous to
the point of disaster. The garage will not
only alleviate the off-street parking problem,
but it will facilitate the present traffic
hazards. We have been longing for this construction
which we believe will step up our
evening business by at least 10 per cent."
Under the terms of the agreement, the
garage would be built wholly by Motor Park
at its expense with the city receiving 2 per
cent of the gross receipts annually. At the end
of 40 years, the project would revert to the
city.
