To correct—Stuart L. Gorelick is sole owner
of the Apollo and Gold Coast Theatres. His
father Oscar Gorelick, operating the Carmen
Theatre in Dearborn, is maintaining a
friendly interest but is not associated in
Stuart's houses. Incidentally, Stuart, who
considered taking over the Elliot in River
Rouge, decided in the negative.
Smalley Circuit Marks
Its 42nd Anniversary
From Eastern Edition
COOPERSTOWN, N. Y.— Striking newspaper
copy marked the 42nd anniversary on
Thanksgiving Day of Smalley Theatres in the
nine towns where the cli'cuit operates. The
ad featured a picture of the late William C.
Smalley, the founder.
"This organization .
. . has
arranged
specially selected pictures for this event,
which is the policy of Smalley Theatres," the
advertisement stated. "See the regular theatre
ad for our anniversary program. Over
the many years, our loyal patrons have made
the theatres an important part of the community.
Thank you all. We have progressed
from the small screen to the large screen of
today. It is joyful to see big pictures on big
screens."
The circuit operates in Cooperstown, Dellii,
Walton, Sidney, Norwich, Fort Plain, Johnstown
and Dolgeville'. Mrs. Hazel Smalley,
widow of the founder, now heads the circuit.
Upstate Theatres, Inc., of Albany buys and
Town Seeks Ways to Keep
Its Only Theatre Open
From Southeast Edition
TAVARES, FLA.—When manager Bill
Cumbaa of the MCM circuit announced that
the Lake Theatre would discontinue
operations on October 29, plans were
immediately set in motion by 19 organizations
of the community to discuss the matter and
to formulate plans whereby the order might
be rescinded. Reason for closing as given
by the theatre management is lack of interest
and attendance on the part of the citizens.
The group is hoping someone will come up
with a constructive plan that will cause the
theatre management to reconsider.
'Teaserama' Print to Be
Destroyed Next March
LORAIN, OHIO—Prmt of the burlesque
film, "Teaserama," involved in the conviction
of Richard Kline, manager of the Lorain
Drive-In, will be destroyed next March 24,
said Lorain County Pi-osecutor Paul J. Mikus.
Kline was fined $500 and costs in Lorain
municipal court on charges of exhibiting a
picture "which tends to corrupt morals."
Mikus said that by waiting 120 days after
Kline's conviction the case cannot be reopened
under state statutes "under any circumstances.
"We will be within the letter
of the law to destroy the film after the fourmonth
wait," said Mikus. The print was
turned over to Mikus for safekeeping.
Austin O'Toole, counsel for Kline, said he
did not know whether Kline would request
return of the print. "Teaserama" was produced
by Irving Klaw of New "York City.
City Prosecutor Ray Miraldi said "Teaserama"
is "nothing more than a smutty, rotten
and vulgar motion picture which is not fit
for public showing." He commended police
for having "the fortitude and guts to stop
showing of such a movie."
To Recommend Closing
LISBON, OHIO— Robert Harrold, manager
of this town's only motion picture theatre,
said he will recommend that the owners close
the theatre. He told this to city council after
that gi-oup. by a three-to-two vote, refused
to repeal the 3 per cent amusement tax.
He said the theatre is operating in the red.
