6.4 Doors<br />

6.4.1 UIC<br />

Covered wag<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Sliding doors must be able to withstand:<br />

- a transverse <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 8 kN (800 kg) due to pressure from the load acting in the centre<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the door over a square <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 m side.<br />

- a transverse <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5 kN (500 kg) <strong>on</strong> each support point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the door.<br />

No damage or residual de<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> is acceptable.<br />

An approximated calculati<strong>on</strong> to give the maximum <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce that can be supported by the door <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

a typical wag<strong>on</strong> (Gbs 611) is shown below. The calculati<strong>on</strong>s do not take any benefits from<br />

other possible distributi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce into c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Input data<br />

Payload (P):<br />

26 t<strong>on</strong><br />

Usable loading length (L): 12.7 m<br />

Door width (W):<br />

2.5 m<br />

Test <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce (F):<br />

8 kN<br />

g: 9.81 m/s 2<br />

F<br />

8<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce expressed in parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the payload: =<br />

= 0. 16<br />

W<br />

2.5<br />

g × P × 9.81×<br />

26×<br />

L<br />

12.7<br />

The calculati<strong>on</strong> gives thus a maximum allowable <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <strong>on</strong> the wag<strong>on</strong> door <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.16 times the<br />

maximum payload <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the wag<strong>on</strong> (in relati<strong>on</strong> to the length <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the door compared to the loading<br />

length). As the test <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce is applied at half the height <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the side the <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce can be c<strong>on</strong>sidered to<br />

be evenly distributed over the entire side, if the moment is calculated from the wag<strong>on</strong> floor.<br />

Double-leaf doors must be able to withstand<br />

- a transverse <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 8 kN (800 kg) due to pressure from the load acting in the centre<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each door leaf over a square <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 m side.<br />

- a transverse <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5 kN (500 kg) <strong>on</strong> each articulated point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the door.<br />

A residual de<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> maximum 2 mm is acceptable <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the door itself but no damage or<br />

residual de<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> is acceptable in the locking, running or guide mechanisms.<br />

High-sided open wag<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The side doors must withstand a <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 20 kN (2000 kg) applied at a height <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 m above<br />

floor level in the centre <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the doorway.<br />
